Yesterday - 14.38 By Nidal al-Mughrabi continue reading this story a German mediator has delivered to Hamas Israel's response on the exchange between hundreds of Palestinian prisoners and an Israeli soldier held in Gaza Strip, but the Islamic group has announced that it need a few days to consider the new proposal. A Hamas official, perhaps heralding a possible breakthrough in the negotiations, said the group will send a delegation to Damascus to meet Hamas leaders in exile. These meetings usually take place only in view of the choices of particular significance. Israel has not leaked anything about what requests might be accepted by Hamas in exchange for the release of Gilad Shalit, an Israeli soldier held in Gaza for three years. The Security Minister Eli Yishai has however confirmed the fears of Israel regarding the release of Palestinian prisoners, a decision that the Israeli government fears could increase the power of Hamas, struggling for some time even with the Palestinian National Authority President Mahmoud Abbas dell'Autorit . We have always said that we would not accept any conditions because, otherwise, our enemies would use it. Instead we must make every effort (to free Shalit), "he all'israeliana Yishai told Army Radio." Dov ' the compromise? I believe that any further public comment would be too, "he said. The agreement between Hamas and Israel provides for the release of Shalit in exchange for that of about 1,000 of the 11,000 Palestinians held in Israeli jails. Officials close to the negotiations were still possible that Israel may agree to release some Palestinian militants who are serving life sentences for their involvement in attacks which have cost the lives of Israeli citizens. The prime minister of Israel, Benjamin Netanyahu, would be willing instead to prohibit the return of freed prisoners in the West Bank, an area close to Israeli cities, and to demand instead that they be sent abroad or brought into the Gaza Strip. - On other news site www.reuters.it Reuters in Italian.
